Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble molecule that plays a crucial role in maintaining various physiological functions. As an antioxidant, it protects the body from harmful effects of free radicals, pollutants, and toxins. The body requires vitamin C for normal physiological functions, including nutrient synthesis and metabolism, supporting both innate and adaptive immune systems, aiding in cholesterol conversion to bile acids, and enhancing iron absorption in the intestines. Deficiency in this vitamin is often associated with conditions such as anemia, infections, gum bleeding, scurvy, poor wound healing, capillary bleeding, muscle degeneration, atherosclerotic plaque formation, and nervous system disorders.

Ascorbic acid
Forms of Vitamin C Supplements:
- Ascorbic acid: This is the most common form of vitamin C supplement, reasonably priced, but individuals with poor gastrointestinal function may experience discomfort due to its acidic nature.
- Mineral ascorbates: Also known as buffered forms of vitamin C, they combine mineral salts with ascorbic acid, resulting in lower acidity. Common mineral ascorbates include sodium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate, potassium ascorbate, and magnesium ascorbate. They are recommended for individuals experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort with regular ascorbic acid supplements, but they may be more expensive.
- Ascorbyl Palmitate: This is a fat-soluble form of vitamin C, also known as a vitamin C ester. Unlike mineral salt forms like Ester-C®, ascorbyl palmitate is a amphiphilic molecule, meaning one end is water-soluble and the other is fat-soluble. It finds applications in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics and has been FDA-approved as a food-grade antioxidant.
- PureWay-C: This is a patented formulation of vitamin C metabolites, citrus bioflavonoids, and ascorbyl palmitate. It claims to provide better absorption, bioavailability, and cellular retention compared to other forms of vitamin C supplements. Small studies suggest that PureWay-C is absorbed more rapidly and leads to higher serum vitamin C levels and greater reductions in inflammation and oxidative stress markers compared to other forms of vitamin C such as ascorbic acid, calcium ascorbate, and Ester-C.
- Liposomal Vitamin C: Liposomes are micro-sized hollow spherical vesicles composed of phospholipid bilayers, with an aqueous core encapsulating hydrophilic substances such as vitamin C. They are one of the most common nanocarriers. Liposomal vitamin C absorption does not rely on vitamin C transporters like SVCT-1, but instead involves direct fusion of liposomes with intestinal cells, releasing vitamin C directly into the cells and eventually into the bloodstream. Liposomal vitamin C has higher bioavailability compared to traditional oral vitamin C supplements. Due to the substantial equipment and technology required for manufacturing, liposomal vitamin C is often more expensive than traditional vitamin C supplements.

Vitamin C
How to Distinguish Effective Liposomal Vitamin C:
Both liposomal vitamin C and ascorbyl palmitate are fat-soluble forms of vitamin C. However, there is a significant difference between them. Liposomal vitamin C refers to a “liposome” form, which is a spherical structure composed of phospholipids (usually phosphatidylcholine) encapsulating vitamin C. On the other hand, ascorbyl palmitate is a “lipid-containing” form of vitamin C, which may lead to confusion with other products containing fatty acids and vitamin C. Some products labeled as “liposomal” vitamin C may not actually contain liposomes but instead may only have vitamin C covalently bonded with fatty acids. A common example is ascorbyl palmitate, which is formed by the chemical combination of palmitic acid with vitamin C, also known as esterified vitamin C. Such esterified vitamin C, like ascorbyl palmitate, is easily broken down by intestinal enzymes, releasing vitamin C (ascorbic acid molecules) and the ester. Its bioavailability is similar to that of ascorbic acid, so careful identification is necessary before purchase!
